ROMEU + JERUSALÉM DO ROMEU (MIRANDELA)

ROMEU

N 41.52940; W 7.05950

Romeu is an old Portuguese parish in the municipality of Mirandela, with an area of 14.22 km² and 280 inhabitants (2011). Its population density was 19.7 inhabitants / km². Its name is another way of calling rosemary (it comes from its Latin name Rosmarinus, sea dew) in Galician and northern Portugal.
It was extinguished (aggregated) by the administrative reorganization of 2012/2013, its territory being integrated into the Union of Parishes of Avantos and Romeu.
A typical village of Trás-os-Montes, with traditional and well-preserved architecture. The bucolic and calm environment creates a pleasant and inviting rural atmosphere. Here you can visit the Museum of Curiosities, where you will find a collection of objects belonging to the Meneres family, ranging from cars to bicycles, agricultural equipment, or cinema material.
From the top of the Mount of Our Lady of Jerusalem and the site of the Quadraçal river, there is a stunning landscape. In the immediate vicinity is the Cachão dam.
On May 18, 1874, a gentleman in a hat came from Porto, riding on horseback from Porto, ready to buy land to create a farm. His name was Clemente Menéres. Then he stopped at Sr. Maria Rita's inn and asked to get him some cod, which came with black rye bread for the first time. In 1966 Manoel Menéres, his son, recreated Maria Rita in the same place with the cook of his house and with family recipes to support social work unique in the country.

It is in this historic site that a meal made with products from Romeu is proposed, served with elegance by women from the surrounding villages in an environment steeped in memories. A coherent heritage of aromas, flavors, people, and history flows into Maria Rita: in short, a local culture woven from accumulated sensibilities and knowledge. There you have a genuine, unique, and unreproducible experience elsewhere in the world. Whoever passes by does not forget and is often moved.

Maria Rita, Quinta do Romeu, and the Museum of Curiosities belong to the Menéres family, ruled by the 4th, 5th and 6th generation. But the opposite is also true, since Romeo has been with the Family for a long time.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Jerusalem was possibly a Prehistoric settlement that is located at 427 meters above sea level. In this place is the Chapel of Our Lady of Jerusalem, some granite outcrops, and archaeological remains. From this viewpoint it is possible to contemplate a magnificent olive grove landscape, the village of Vale de Couce, the vineyards of Quinta Clemente Menéres, the Site of Community Interest in Romeu, the Alto do Prado do Castelo, the mountains of Faro, the Mirandela, the Santa Comba mountain range and part of the Bornes mountain range. It is a place of cultural interest, landscape, and viewpoint.

The old train station in Romeu, completely abandoned and in ruins, whose settlement with the same name is located about two kilometers to the east, has the characteristic set of three buildings and duplication of the road. The station itself, with two floors, is very similar to that of Carvalhais and is complemented with the sanitary facilities and the goods warehouse, slightly away. Jerusalem of Romeu developed from the farm with the same name, in the vicinity of the village of Vale de Couce, which is crossed, in a raised curve, by the railroad. The road crosses the small village and then meanders towards the Carvalhais stream, which you will find again, a little to the south. About the landscape and the implantation of the road, this is one of the most interesting moments of the section between Mirandela and Bragança. The Carvalhais stream runs at the bottom of a valley dug between steep banks, while the railway line is implanted at an ever-higher level. Until the slopes of the Serra da Nogueira, dozens of kilometers away, the itinerary has a steep slope. This means that the landscape that is observed to the south - the line now has a dominant west-east direction - is very comprehensive on the gently undulating fields, on a soil dominated by rainfed crops.
